Maths Week 2025

Next week, October 13th – 17th, we will be celebrating Maths Week Ireland here in ACETNS. Throughout the week, the children will be engaging in a variety of fun and meaningful maths activities in school. We would also love for families to use this week as an opportunity to explore maths together at home and in your local environment.

We encourage everyone to check out the many Maths Week events happening across the country. Full details are available at https://www.mathsweek.ie/2025/events/, but we would particularly recommend Maths in the City – Dublin City Centre (link) and Maths in the City – Airfield Estate, Dundrum (link) happening this weekend.

This year, we’re also encouraging all children to begin to “use their Maths Eyes” and recognise maths in the real world through the Have You Got Maths Eyes initiative. This fantastic project helps people of all ages see maths in everyday life – at home, in school, on the street, or in the park. By making maths visible in familiar settings, Maths Eyes builds confidence, develops problem-solving skills, encourages conversation, and highlights the real-world value of mathematics.

We invite parents and children to take photos when they spot maths in the world around them – it could be bus timetables, shop prices, speed limits, patterns, angles or shapes in sport – the possibilities are endless! We’ll share and discuss some of these photos at our school assembly and hope to feature them on the school website too. Some children may even wish to enter the Have You Got Maths Eyes Poster Competition — details are available here: https://haveyougotmathseyes.com/competition/maths-eyes-poster-competition/.

Finally, we would love to include some parental voices to help children see how maths is used in everyday life. If you’re interested, please send a short video to denis.kelly15@acetns.ie introducing yourself and explaining how you use maths in your work or daily life – for example:

“Hi, my name is ___ and I’m ___’s mam/dad. In my job as a ___, I use maths to…”

We’ll share a selection of these videos during assemblies and with classes throughout the week.

We hope everyone enjoys a fun and inspiring Maths Week 2025!
